Funny stories about Vietnam

Last week was the so-called reading week in HKU. Students were not tied to the university. I took the chance to revisit Vietnam. Hidden in my tiny school bag was a huge book, as thick as two bricks: The Flower Ornament Scripture

First stop: Hanoi. I was soooo delighted to find a red rose elegantly blooming in a vase in the bathroom. I relocated it to the reading desk and opened my thick book. The more I read the more I regretted the old days in Shanghai. I squandered my precious youth on watching Americansitcoms. What if I had had the wisdom to read a Buddhist scripture! Even one page would have saved me from all sorts of my follies!

Hong Kong dollar?

heFlower Ornament Scripture was my good-luck charm. I forgot to change my HK dollar into Vietnamese dong, and I got on a BUS! To cut it short, I got to my hotel without any trouble. Homage to Huayanjing!

I dived into the scripture after a hot bath. The journey to heart was always an energy-consuming one. I fell asleep after the first 20 chapters, exhausted. The next morning, I was waked up in a very lyrical way—by roasters. Looking out from the balcony, I saw an old church, a little bit chilled in the drizzle. I went down to have a walk.

Then I saw a lake and an islet in the lake. That must be the famous lake of the capital. I dreamed of it quite a few times after my first visit a few years ago. “Maybe I could see that Chinese-style fortress gate,” I thought. I did some research on that gate for my essay for Buddhist Art last semester. When I saw it again, I believed we had been friends for thousands of years, me and the gate by the lake.

Second stop: Huzhiming or Saigon

I fought against waves of heat and made it to chapter 40 that day. While I was getting ready to go to bed, I heard some noise. What? The familiar noise from my childhood—little claws running swiftly on wooden board. Rats were having a great party in the storage room! How could I be so sure? Because a bat paid a visit to my room in the afternoon. When rats eat salt, they become bats. This is the common sense that the country fellows in my town pass on to me. To be frank, I was still a little bit scared. Then I laughed! Amid fear and fun, I fell asleep. Early the next morning, I went again for a walk. My respect for Vietnamese creativity reached skyhigh when I saw how they worshipped Christ in a catholic church. (See for yourself in the picture)

Then, I am back to HK, sharing with dear you the story and worrying about loads of essays.
